Anna Cosimini

sculptor | potter | maker

Anna Cosimini is a sculptor, potter and maker. Anna has worked with clay for most of her life, beginning at the age of 11 in the studio of Maribeth Amber in Natick, MA. Anna interned at Santa Fe Clay in New Mexico during their renowned summer workshop series in 2011. After graduating with a BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2014, she interned with the San Diego prototyping startup SALT Concept Cultivation, and apprenticed at Cuzick Pottery in San Diego in 2015-16 while teaching figure sculpture at Get Centered Clay Studio in La Mesa, CA. Anna is now one of seven professional studio associates at Clay Associates in San Diego, a non-profit studio and school with roots in the local community since 1969. Anna is currently the ceramics teacher at McKinley Elementary School, an International Baccalaureate School in North Park of San Diego.

Anna’s ceramic work spans from the simplest of functional pottery to experimental abstract forms to realist figure sculpture and portraiture. The complex, biomorphic and often very fragile structures she gravitates towards are strongly influenced by the commonality of forms in nature she finds atop mountains and underwater, as well as in organic and astronomical structures often too vast or too minuscule for the naked human eye. Oftentimes, these are worlds that are easy to overlook. Her interest in figure sculpture is driven by a love of the diversity and beauty of human forms and features.

Anna’s functional and sculptural ceramic work use mid range and high fire clay bodies, homemade and commercial glazes, oxides, and colorants, and are primarily gas fired. Anna also creates with a variety of other mediums, including wood and metal. Anna participates in the San Diego Pottery Tour and in Clay Associates' biannual shows in June and December. Anna's work may also be found at Butler's Coffeehouse in Spring Valley and at the Japanese bistro Himitsu in La Jolla, CA. On the East coast, Anna's sculpture and pottery is available at The Hagan Collection in Wellesley, MA.
